Chinese Premier vows to act on people’s discontent [The Age]

Australia: This article is too short to be informative yet loaded enough to glean clues about the complexion of this article – for example, ‘rubber-stamp parliament’ is highly suggestive.

Premier Wen Jiabao has acknowledged ”great resentment” in China over a range of issues including growing income disparity and corruption, and vowed his government will tackle them.

In a speech opening the annual 10-day session of the rubber-stamp parliament, Mr Wen admitted his government had ”not yet fundamentally solved a number of issues that the masses feel strongly about”.

These included high consumer and housing prices, ”significant problems concerning food safety and rampant corruption”, and people being illegally removed from their land by developers.

There have been internet calls in the past two weeks for Sunday ”strolling” rallies in major cities.

They have largely fizzled under smothering security.
