An increase in Chinese travellers through Melbourne Airport is expected to continue in December, with three additional airlines operating direct daily flights.

The airport’s international passenger numbers for November increased by 9.6 per cent on last year, with a 26.7 per cent rise in Chinese passport holders.

The 38,700 Chinese commuters surpassed the number of visitors from the traditional United Kingdom market, Melbourne Airport chief Chris Woodruff said in a statement.

”With three airlines – Air China, China Eastern and China Southern – now flying daily direct services between Melbourne and China for the first time, the potential of China to become Melbourne’s major tourism market is becoming more and more apparent,” Mr Woodruff said.

He said the Chinese market was expected to continue to grow.

The international passenger performance was mostly driven by Asia, with Japan passport holders up 51.6 per cent, South Korea 36.3 per cent and Malaysia up 18.7 per cent, the statement said.

More than 43,000 international passengers passed through Melbourne Airport in November than the same time last year.

Overall passengers numbers at the airport increased by 7.4 per cent for the month.
