Website works as gov’t watchdog in E China [China Daily]

I got a 504 Gateway Timeout error when I tried to visit this site twice today – here’s a new social phenomenon perhaps triggered by a nationalism against corruption in China. Nevertheless, what is clear is that online citizen watchdogs are taking root in China, and getting popular.

A website located in Wenzhou, East China’s Zhejiang province, has built the reputation for revealing scandals, including officials’ malpractices, Chongqing Evening News reported.

Dubbed “the website with the most breaking news” by netizens, 703804.com revealed a videotape of senior citizens being beat by staff members from a real estate development company while filing complaints with the local government on Nov 30.

Following the disclosure, the local department of public security formed a team to look into the case and detained four suspects.

In 2009, the local government recalled a policeman’s permit to drive a police car after photos of him using the car to walk his dog was posted on the website. In the same year, a civil servant was fired after a photo of her playing video games during work hours was found on the website. The site was also the first to disclose that Yang Xianghong, a local official, refused to return from a business trip to France in 2008.

Wang Zhongyi, head of Pingyang county of Wenzhou, said the website can help to supervise the government’s performance and encourage officials to improve their work.
